Capturing the power of the sun is something we've been doing for a long time. BP was the first company to take solar technology used in space and develop it for everyday use. That was more than 30 years ago. Today we are one of the world's top solar power companies.
Since we started, solar's technology, efficiency and popularity have bloomed and for the last five years solar panel production has grown by nearly a third every year. That's around 10 times faster than the world economy.
As well as being low in carbon dioxide emissions, solar can also bring power to people living in the most remote communities with little or no access to an electricity grid. At the same time it can provide power to run houses and buildings in many parts of the developed world, such as Germany and California.
And solar complements wind power. Typically, windy places do not tend to be very sunny and vice versa.
