Wind is one of the fastest growing sources of low-carbon power. In the last five years it has grown at an average rate of at least 20% every year. Wind is also among the most cost-competitive sources of low-carbon power. In favourable wind regimes, onshore wind power can cost less than conventional power generation.
Because the wind does not blow all the time, the power generated from it is intermittent. This typically means wind can only ever provide around 10-12% of the power we use.
That may not sound like a lot, but converting an additional 10% of the world's power generation capacity to wind would be the equivalent of replacing every car in the world with a hybrid.
While a range of other solutions are still needed, wind power will play an important role in the journey towards a lower-carbon emissions world.
