Wind Power
Today's business
BP's business is focused on placing wind farms on our own sites, in some cases, making additional use of land that is already being used for industrial purposes.
To date we have completed the development of two wind farms, both located in the Netherlands:
- Our site in Rotterdam opened in October 2002, comprising nine turbines, with a total installed capacity of 22.5 MW. Located at our jointly-owned Nerefco refinery, it was the first wind farm in Europe to be built on an industrial site. When running at full capacity, the farm generates enough electricity to meet the annual demands of some 13,000 average homes.
- Our second site opened in June 2005 at our oil terminal in the port of Amsterdam. The farm has a total installed capacity of 9 MW, using the largest turbines in the Netherlands. Collectively they will displace 5,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
- We have also begun a planning application process to construct our first site in the UK. The proposed site would consist of 10 turbines.
