Introduction to Low Carbon Power

Why BP?

Reeds in water

We have existing skills in the low carbon power sector. We have a 30-year track record in the solar industry, are leading the way in the new field of commercial hydrogen power, own and operate wind farms and have an established presence in gas-fired power.

BP Alternative Energy represents the next step in our journey to put good business into action on climate change.

In 1997, we were the first major energy company to acknowledge that action needed to be taken to combat carbon dioxide emissions.

Between 1998 and 2001, we reduced our own emissions to 10% below their 1990 level. We hit this target nine years earlier than promised, while creating over $600mn of net present value as a result of the efficiency savings. Since then we've continued to reduce emissions.

Our aims:

By 2008, BP Alternative Energy will:

  • Increase our solar sales from 110MW of capacity in 2005 to 300MW
  • Develop more than 450 MW of new wind power, growing from our current 30 MW
  • Begin construction of 975MW of clean hydrogen power with carbon sequestration
  • Develop and begin construction of over 700 MW of additional high-efficiency natural gas generation
  • Be the leading marketer and trader of clean energy and carbon credits
